Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan, blonde-haired and blue-eyed
she was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in Fairfield Connecticut to Susan
(Duggan), a former actress and English teacher and Harry Hyra, a maths teacher.
Meg Ryan is of Ruthenian, Polish, Irish, and German roots. ("Hyra" is
a Ruthenian surname and "Ryan" is her maternal grandmother's maiden
name). Meg graduated from Bethel high school in Bethel in June 1979. After
moving to New York, she attended New York University where she majored in
journalism. Meg Ryan is her new name, entered acting to earn extra cash as she
finished her education. Her debut on screen came in 1981 when she made a brief
appearance as Candice Bergen’s daughter in George Cukor's last film Rich and
Famous (1981). She auditioned and was eventually named Betsy in the daily
television soap As the World turns (1956). From 1982 until 1984, she was a part
of the cast. Meg also played a role in the TV show One of the Boys (1982) but
the show was soon removed. In 1984, she moved to a tinsel town, and got an
appearance in the western television Series Wildside (1985). Meg had a small
role in Top Gun (1986), which resulted in her being cast in Steven Spielberg’s
Innerspace (1987), where she was a co-star with Dennis Quaid. In the remake of
D.O.A., she starred in a second time with Quaid. (1988) They got married on
Saint Valentine's Day 1991. In 1989, Meg appeared in When Harry Met Sally...
(1989) and the scene at the restaurant gained a lot of attention. Meg was
nominated for the Golden Globe as well as the BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred
with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and this time she played three
roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. In 1993, she co-starred alongside Tom in
Sleepless in Seattle (1993), for which she was nominated again for the Golden
Globe. Meg determined to take on a different role than her peers in 1994 when
she played the character of Meg as a drunken mother/wife in the film When a Man
Loves a Woman (1994). Then, she went back to her "cute" I.Q. (1994)
and French Kiss (1995). People Magazine named Meg "Woman of the Year"
in 1994 with the Harvard Hasty Pudding Award.
